This is so true and the classic dilemma of all constructed systems. They are rigid and don’t allow for much flexibility. And that also means that they run counter to the inherent qualities of the Web. I wrote about this last year, too: matthiasott.com/notes/construction-vs-growth

What triggered the post was an episode of Netflix’s documentary series Abstract which portrayed Neri Oxman and her work. She approaches systems design as gardening. So instead of building a system from small, reusable parts, she tries to create the *conditions* under which…

…a system grows and then tries to guide this growth into a desired direction with a lot of prototyping. Given that most UI elements will soon be commoditized and possibly AI-generated, Oxman’s approach to design strikes me as being even more relevant than we might realize.

Just one example of her work: She and her team at the MIT “created a swarm of robots designed to rapidly build high-strength tubular structures by winding fibreglass filament around themselves.” dezeen.com/2018/10/05/neri-oxman-fiberbots-mediated-matter-lab-mit-architectural-structures/
