Only recently, I have started to REALLY understand why climate scientists are so obsessed with and, frankly, terrified of feedback loops. It is not about a little bit warmer weather here and there, or a bit less Arctic sea ice, or a little higher sea level. ClimateBen/1204877153139077120

The whole system of atmospheric and ocean circulation relies on the poles being cooler that the rest of the planet. This system has seen a phase of extraordinary stability in the last thousands of years which was the reason humans could start to settle, plant seeds, and harvest.

What happens at the moment, is that the whole climate system as we know it is getting more and more unstable and unpredictable. And this is also why, although we are seeing the global mean temperature rise as predicted, the consequences might be far worse than previously thought.

The feedback loops, like less ice reflecting less sunlight, or more methane in the atmosphere because of thawing permafrost are making all of this worse and, most importantly, exponentially more unpredictable. We are leaving our “garden of eden”.
